Beers & Best Practices

  • Wednesday, September 22, 2021
  • 5:30 PM - 8:00 PM
  • Tafts, Land Grant, BrewDog (in this order)
This event will be a mix of bar crawl / networking meets Ted Talk.  We will have a special guest speaker at each of the venues where they will give a 15 - 20 minute presentation about a topic of their choice.  After each speaker is finished we will stick around to have a beer and network then move on to the next destination to hear from that guest.

We are leaving it up to the individual presenter as to what topic they would like to discuss based on their industry expertise.  Our lineup of speakers come from diverse industries and careers which will provide for a unique perspective for our audience.

About the speakers:

Tim Hawk - President, WSA

Hawk is a principal with WSA and has developed a practice strength focused on the design and adaptation of buildings to implement an organization’s strategy. His designs are nationally recognized for significant, sustainable interior environments.  He has prepared space programs, designs, and documents for clients in a wide range of project types but is regarded as a thought leader for academic and workplace settings.

Hawk holds both a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Architecture from The Ohio State University and has completed post-graduate studies at the University of Illinois at Chicago in the History of Architecture and Art. He is a registered architect in Ohio and nationally through the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards.  Hawk joined WSA in 1993, became a Principal in 1998 and has served as President since 2005. He shares design and administrative duties within the firm and is the strategic leader of business development activities. He is a strong mentor for staff and focuses on continuing education as a tool for practice evolution. Hawk has received nearly 20 national and regional design awards for projects completed under his leadership.

In addition to his practice activities, Hawk is an adjunct faculty member in the Columbus State Community College architecture program and serves on the national board of the American Institute of Architects.

PLACE IS A HUMAN TOPIC; boundaries and intentional connections

This topic is one of the biggest conversations our culture is actively discussing: collectively struggling our way out of a global pandemic, shining a light on imbalanced systemic structures on which our country was formed, and existing in a place where boundaries are continuously ambiguous. Placemaking is a human topic.

Design is the connective tissue between individuals. Our ethical obligation is to look at hour we can help people relate to each other and help them explore their relationships.

Boundaries are not barriers. Boundaries help us grow with our neighbors while barriers create isolation and prevent mutual growth. When paired with edges and thresholds, boundaries support a culture of difference and diversity that provides us with reasons to want to connect with each other.

Our issues with boundaries are the fundamental problems of society. If we can keep this conversation in the realm of the physical, it has to do with boundaries, demarcation, precincts, and areas. But, if we extend this conversation to the realm of the metaphysical, it has to do with the connective tissue that nourishes society.
